1.0 Policy Statement:
Physical and remote access to the main collection of the WHOI Library is limited to Woods Hole scientific community affiliated patrons who have contributed to the support of the library in one of the Library access categories (See Library website for access categories, services and fees).

Non-affiliated patrons may use the collections during staffed hours Monday-Friday for browsing, copying, reading and printing on the premises. Access to restricted collections is by appointment during staffed hours Monday-Friday.

Individuals doing research can expect the assistance of Library staff in locating materials related to the topic of research, as well as in the use of available finding aids, indices, and databases. Staff may conduct more extensive research, as time permits, for non-affiliated researchers on a fee-for-service basis. (See Library website for more information).

2.0 Collection-Specific Access Policies:

    2.1 Rare Books Room
    Access to the Rare Books Room is available to members of the Woods Hole scientific community under the supervision of the Library Director or Archivist. Non-affiliated patrons must apply to the Library Director and such access may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

    2.2 Special Collections:
    Access to materials in Special Collections is available to members of the Woods Hole scientific community under the supervision of the Library Director or Archivist. Non-affiliated patrons must apply to the Library Director and such access may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

    2.3 Administrative Papers:
    Access to and WHOI Administrative papers requires a written request to the Library Director. In addition, requests for access to administrative papers must be approved by the Director/CEO and access to WHOI administrative papers must be approved by the WHOI Director.

    2.4 Archives:
    A minimum two-year moratorium (from the date of deposit) accompanies all data and most images in the Archives and the WHOI Data Library and Archives. Further restrictions apply to records of the Corporation, Trustee and Executive Committee minutes; Records of the Offices of the Directors; Student Records; Human Resources; and other such records.
